Distribution of singularities in the cosmic microwave background polarization

چکیده
1550-7998=20 The polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation will have a distribution of singularities and antisingularities, points where the polarization vanishes for topological reasons. The statistics of polarization singularities provides a nontrivial scheme to analyze the polarization maps that is distinct from the usual two-point correlation functions. Here we characterize the statistics of the singularity distribution in simulated polarization maps, and make predictions that can be compared with ongoing and upcoming observations. We use four different characterizations: the number density of singularities, the nearest-neighbor distance between singularities, the critical exponent that describes the scaling of total topological charge q within a closed curve of length L (q / L ), and the angular two-point angular correlation functions for singularities of equal and opposite charge. In general, we find that the number density of singularities is sensitive to the underlying cosmology but the distribution is uniform random except on small scales where singularities of the same charge repel and those of opposite charge attract. These conclusions appear to be extremely robust with respect to variations in the underlying cosmological model and the presence of non-Gaussianity; the only exception we found are cases where statistical isotropy is grossly violated. This suggests that, within the assumption of statistical isotropy, the distribution is a robust feature of the last scattering surface and potentially may be used as a tool to discriminate effects that occur during photon propagation from the last scattering surface to the present epoch.

Geometrical and statistical properties of polarization of CMB are analyzed. Singular points of the vector field which describes CMB polarization are found and classified. Statistical distribution of the singularities is studied. A possible signature of tensor perturbations in CMB polarization is discussed. For a further analysis of CMB statistics Minkowski functionals are used, which present a ...

We provide computationally convenient expressions for all marginal distributions of the polarization cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum distribution P (C |σ ), where C = { CTT , C TE , C EE , C BB } denotes the set of ensemble-averaged polarization CMB power spectra, and σ = { σ TT , σ TE , σ EE , σ BB } the set of the realization-specific polarization CMB power spectra. This dist...
متن کاملLensing reconstruction of primordial cosmic microwave background polarization
We discuss the possibility to directly reconstruct the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! polarization field at the last scattering surface by accounting for modifications imposed by the gravitational lensing effect. The suggested method requires a tracer field of the large scale structure lensing potentials that deflected propagating CMB photons from the last scattering surface. This required i...
متن کاملThe Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background
We summarize the physical mechanism by which the cosmic microwave background acquires a small degree of polarization. We discuss the imprint left by gravitational waves and the use of polarization as a test of the inflationary paradigm. We discuss some physical processes that affect the cosmic microwave background polarization after recombination, such as gravitational lensing and the reionizat...
متن کاملCosmic Strings in a Universe with Non-critical Matter Density
In the light of recent work which suggests that structure formation by cosmic strings in a critical matter density universe require large biases, we discuss the effects of reducing the matter density. Using a full linear Einstein-Boltzmann solver, we compute the cold dark matter density field and the microwave background anisotropies/polarization in a flat universe with a non-zero cosmological ...
